Editorial Review:
Product Description: Jane is in real estate.
Today is Saturday.
Jane has an open house.
She must schlep the Open House signs to the car.
See Jane schlep.
Schlep, Jane. Schlep.
Schlep, schlep, schlep.
In text that captures the unque rhythms of the original Dick and Jane readers, and in 35 all-new illustrations, a story unfolds in which Dick and Jane--hero and heroine of the classic books for children that generations of Americans have used when learning to read--manage to express shades of feeling and nuances of meaning that ordinary English just can't deliver. How? By speaking Yiddish, employing terms that convey an attitude--part plucky self-assertion, part ironic fatalism. When Dick schmoozes, when Jane kvetches, when their children fress noodles at a Chinese restaurant, the clash of cultures produces genuine hilarity.

We all remember the "Dick and Jane" reading Primers. This is a humorous version that introduces simple Yiddish words. Very well done!

Even if you aren't familiar with Yiddish this satire is good fun (and there is a glossary but it makes for slower reading and comprehension). I always HATED all of the Dick and Jane books in the early 1950's when I had to read them, and I thought it would be enjoyable to see some fun made of them. Dick and Jane's parents are no longer the perfect examples of how adults ... Read More

My sister-in-law sent this book to my husband. I began to read it because it was sitting out on the coffee table. I didn't "get" it the first time I picked it up. Honestly, I just thought it was dumb, and was unimpressed.
Two days later, it was still sitting on the coffee table, and I was on the sofa with no one home, nothing else at hand to read, so I picked it up again. This time I read it cover to cover, including the glossary (which really is as funny as the book).

This is a totally fun romp through the early days of learning to read
Those of us old enough (pardon the expression) to remember the reading primer we had in grade school, should really get a "kick" out of this. Yiddish expressions have become somewhat commonplace in many cities and you will not have to be Jewish, or know the language to appreciate this. It will put a smile on your face, something all of us can use.
